Congratulations, Bake Baker!
2010 Jody Spooner Volunteer of the Year!
1:37 pm 06-7-10
Congratulations to Bake Baker, the 2010 Jody Spooner Volunteer of the Year! This award was developed by the Region One Board in Jody's memory to honor all volunteers and to recognize those special people exemplifying Jody's caring, love of our sport and true spirit of volunteerism. Jody could always be found in the race office at every race with a big smile for everyone; she served on many committees with Team Gilboa and Region One and served as treasurer of Region One for several years. She cheered for every athlete, not just her own! (For more information about Jody and this award, click on the Spooner Volunteer Award button on the left.)
Bake is a wonderful example of Jody's enthusiasm in volunteering. Among the comments from those nominating him were: "Attitude always pleasant and friendly........brings no ego to the hill and will do whatever is necessary to make sure each race runs smoothly......first to arrive in the morning, last one to leave......Consistently goes above and beyond what most do.....hard work, warmth and wonderful smile....." and summing it all up...."BAKE MAKES COLD MORNINGS WARMER!" Congratulations, Bake, and Thank You for your tremendous contributions to our Region One Family!

Congratulations, Erich Sailer
Austrian Grand Decoration of Honor
12:22 pm 06-2-10
Austrian-born and longtime Buck Hill ski racing program director, Erich Sailer, was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honor in Silver for Services to the Republic of Austria. He earned this honor through his dedication to the promotion and advancement of alpine ski racing in Minnesota and across the United States.
The Decoration of Honor is conferred only upon persons who have acted in such a way as to provide outstanding public benefit and/or excellent services to the Republic of Austria. Sailer is only the second Minnesotan to receive this award. The first was Horst Rechelbacher, founder of Aveda Corporation.
Sailer was born and raised in Austria. A former Austrian National Class racer, he placed in the top three in the National Championships and in the top 10 in what are now World Cup Races. As a pro racer, Erich placed several times in the top 10 at the Pro World Championships. He is a US Ski Coaches Association Level IV Master Coach and is a fully certified ski instructor and former ski examiner. Sailer has coached more than 30,000 young racers in the United States.
In addition to his 50+ years of doing summer racing camps and 41 years at Buck Hill, Sailer has also run the Erich Sailer Ski Racing Camps in Colorado, Oregon and Austria for the past 20 years. Sailer has been hugely successful throughout his coaching career. Some of his proteges have participated in and/or won Olympic medals (i.e. Lindsey Vonn, Sarah Schleper, Kristina Koznick), National Championships, college and Junior Olympic titles. He has been named "United States Ski Association's (USSA - U.S. Ski Team) Domestic Coach of the Year," "USSA Development Coach of the Year" three times, and has received the U.S. Ski Association's Tom Reynolds Lifetime Achievement Award. In 2006, Erich Sailer was inducted into the U.S. National Ski Hall of Fame.
"Erich has had an incredible impact, both nationally and internationally, on alpine ski racing and has been a true inspiration to many coaches," says Austrian Consul General Thomas Schnoell. "The Republic of Austria, with its long tradition of ski culture, is proud of the influence he has had on American skiing. At the same time he has always maintained his links with his home country. I am honored to present him with this distinction today."
