Ski Racing was founded on the idea that each racer from beginning to highly advanced, deserves the physical training and emotional encouragement to achieve their racing goals, no matter how simple or ambitious. The athletes and coaches are a team within a team, pursuing a shared passion for ski racing, encouraging and challenging one another to train with intensity, race with confidence and live with integrity.
We are also reminded that ski racing is not just about goals and winning. It’s about volunteerism and family. Jody Spooner, a member of our ski racing family, passed away from a "senseless tragedy". She lived her life with a clear sense of purpose and taught all who knew her the true value of family, friendship and community. Jody was an ambassador to ski racing - she was always willing to answer the questions of a concerned parent, volunteer in the race office and all Team Gilboa fundraisers, served as treasurer on the Region One Board, never complained or had a cross word. You could also find Jody at the bottom of the hill cheering for EVERY athlete to cross the finish line, like the racer was her own child. The world could use more people like Jody.
The Jody Spooner Volunteer award helps to keep Jody's spirit in your heart and lead by her example. Everyone has something to offer through their passion for ski racing, encouraging others and volunteering their time. We encourage you to share your spirit with others both on and off the hill through volunteerism.
The Region 1 Board has developed this annual award in Jody’s memory and encourages all Region 1 members/families to nominate those special people exemplifying Jody’s caring, love of our sport and true spirit of volunteerism. A group of the six Region 1 unit reps will review the nominations and make a decision before the April Region 1 board meeting and notify the recipient. A certificate and monetary gift valued at $200.00 will be presented to the recipient at the April board meeting.
